The A M Warkup MEATSPEED Finishing Building began life in the early 1980’s. It grew in response to the challenge created by pig producers’ growing requirement for a building which would combine the high performance generated by the (then current and popular) use of individual climate controlled pens with the employment of a more open plan layout. This combination would provide the same high levels of productivity within a lighter and more amenable environment in line with the growing market pressure for improved animal welfare. The MEATSPEED was a pioneering effort to meet this demanding brief and proved highly successful and very popular. It consisted of single, environmentally controlled rooms, rather than single environment pens, with an open plan layout with pen fronts and low dividing walls to simply retain the pigs into groups.
The key to the MEATSPEED’s success was the use of a fully slatted floor combined with precisely controlled ventilation and feeding systems. Pigs of all genotypes grew quickly, efficiently and quietly and batches could be quickly moved using a system of interlocking pen gates and a single main passageway. Since those early beginnings the design has become a classic, much copied in attempts to emulate its success.
Our original concept has, however, not stood still. Working hand in hand with our customers, listening to their opinions, concerns and ideas we have continually developed and fine tuned our designs. The result? The MEATSPEED Classic. In addition, new construction techniques, adoption of fully evaluated new materials and a ready willingness to absorb details of current independent research are all part of our design ethos.
Developments in recent times include the use of highly efficient computer controlled Skov ventilation systems, low energy LED Agrilamp lighting systems combined with the improved daily gain and decreased feed/water wastage of Crystal Spring feeders. Such developments all play their part in the producers’ constant need to achieve cost effective increases in productivity and reduced overhead without detriment to animal welfare and with carefully considered mitigation of environmental impact.
