AM Warkup History

During the early 1960's the British Pig Industry was going through a revolution. The benefits of growing pigs in controlled environment buildings had been discovered as well as the benefits of genetic improvement. Many well known international companies were formed in the UK at this time.

As a consequence of these major changes there was a need for new buildings. At the time the building method used was traditional brick and concrete. This building method although robust was slow and expensive.

Mick Warkup, founder and owner of AM Warkup Ltd, a farmer and joiner from Beeford in the East Riding of Yorkshire had the idea of a pre fabricated panel-building system that would be robust, flexible in design, allow for quick erection on site and, most importantly, be cost effective.
The company was formed in 1963 and found instant success building many new pig farms in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (many of which are still in use today). As the system developed and more components were made at the factory thus reducing site labour it became cost effective to build all over the UK.

Modern panel production techniques and materials have been introduced over the years as a method of improving quality, longevity and cost, but the basic tried and tested system principles remain the same.

The British Pig Industry attracted many overseas visitors keen to improve their own industries. This led to opportunities for building shells to be exported for local erection and fitting.

Computer technology allows acurate and speedy design, making it possible for us to deliver a fast and effective service world wide, whatever your local requirements may be. We can train erectors here in the UK or send you a qualified foreman to train local labour force.

Our standard building range has been designed to give the most cost effective building shell that fits around modern efficient pig production systems. We have several options for insulation values to take into account local climatic conditions. There are also choices of material to suit customer choice and area building regulations. If the standard range does not suit your requirement, we can design a package to suit.
